He was an innovator in woodworking tools and techniques, and a pioneer in using power tools to boost production. After training to be a sculptor at the Art Students League of New York, he developed and produced a distinctive line of "functional sculpture" - wooden bowls, trays, and serving ware - that captured the essence of Midcentury Modern Design. Furniture and Interiors of the 1940's by Anne Bony
The 1940s marked a period of transition in interior design: the quarrel between ancient and modern was outdated, the combination of function and art was essential, and interior designers were more focused on new creations rather than on post-war reconstruction. Following the cubist and art-deco eras, and the modernity of the thirties, the 1940s offered an innovative return to designs influenced by the Neo-classical and the Louis XVI styles - a return to the rustic and to rocaille. The style of this period exhibits all the contradictions that arise from a society that was in a general state of shock, unsure of what the f...

Guglielmo Ulrich by Luca Scacchetti
Architect, designer, interior decorator, painter, Ulrich is unquestionably one of the most fascinating figures in the history of modern Italian furniture. A believer in the strong need for the modernisation of taste and the home, he showed great passion for materials and their most unusual combinations, as well as a unique interest in artisanal production. Ulrich, who was born in Milan, was the perfect example of what the world of production was really like, of the ability of Lombard craftsmanship to adapt to the technological innovations of the time. Close to Northern Italy's upper bourgeoisie, between the 1920's 1970'...

After having married and then abandoned the functionalism in vogue in the 30s, he presented in 1939 at the Salon des artistes décorateurs a boudoir that provocatively marks the return to the ornament. From 1931 to 1972, this indefatigable traveler made more than a thousand projects around the world, from the development of the workers' city of Aplemont in the north of France to the decoration of the Shah's palace in Iran, creating with lightness a style that evok...
